Field and Satellite Images-Based Investigation of Rivers Morphological Aspects

Worldwide and especially in less developed regions, process-based evaluations and/or geomorphological information on large-scale rivers are still scarce. Such investigation become of ?urgent ?need due to the climate change expected occurrence extreme floods drought which ?may ?threaten safety nearby downstream cities, regions that highly sensitive ?affected by climatic changes. The Tigris River, Iraq, is one such river has undergone significant alteration its flow morphologic aspects construction many dams. However, morphology for reaches this uninvestigated. To end, field satellite-based investigations into a reach located between Makhool District Tikrit City have been conducted. In addition cross-sectional survey-based determination geometrical aspects, sinuosity indices-based evaluation planform was implemented, utilizing satellite approach. Furthermore, characteristics bed material were identified through sampling. Investigation results show steep slope islands low altitude with an elongated shape. mild alternating bars. dominant particle sizes coarse medium gravel shape disc particles. Moreover, detection indicated fading out disappearance some secondary channels, growth islands, movement bends downstream. percentage changing parts period 1975–2021 14%. Most change, 11%, occurred after Mosul Dam. This reveals sensitivity conducted fieldwork applied methodology contribute supporting efforts add knowledge worldwide about uninvestigated rivers.
